In 2019, I co-founded and organized L.A.'s first tech zine fair. We were inspired by Mimi Onuoha and the NY Tech Zine Fair to gather marginalized communities in L.A. to share their perspectives on technology. Workshop attendees created their own analog camera filters, learned to make their own digital archives, and coded with Casey Reas, the creator of Processing. 21 artists and organizations tabled zines featuring critical, alternative, and practical approaches to technology. We were honored to host an absentee table filled with tech zines sent to us from across the U.S., Argentina, and India. Over 200 artists, zinesters, and technologists attended tiny tech zines. The event was covered in several digital publications including Hyperallergic.
Our work continues today in more themed zine fests, community listening circles, zine making, mutual aid fundraising, and workshops.
